The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chibuike Ikenga, has defended the decision of Governor Sim Fubara to withdraw from the party’s governorship primaries.
According to a report by Arise News on Friday, May 22, 2026, speaking during an interview, Ikenga said the governor stepped down to help restore peace, stability and development in Rivers State after months of political tension.
According to him, political leaders in the state believed the decision would help governance move forward and create a calmer atmosphere for residents.
Ikenga also dismissed claims that the APC in Rivers State is divided into factions. He maintained that both Governor Fubara and other cleared aspirants remain members of the same party and are working together in the interest of the state.
He further denied allegations that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, controls the affairs of the APC in Rivers State. Ikenga stated that although Wike remains an influential political figure in Rivers and across Nigeria, he is not a member of the APC and does not determine what happens within the party in the state.
The APC spokesman also defended the party’s primary process, insisting that the party follows its rules and internal democratic procedures during elections and screening exercises.
