The Nasarawa State Chapter of the Labour Party loyal to Julius Abure’s camp has commenced the distribution of free expression of interest and nomination forms to party members and intending aspirants in the state.

The forms being distributed include Governorship, Senatorial, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly expression of interest and nomination forms.

Chairman of Labour Party in the state, Alexander Ombugu, made the disclosure during a press briefing at the party’s secretariat in Lafia, on Friday.

According to him, the party under the Julius Abure’s camp decided to issue the free forms to intending aspirants as a way to cushion the effect of the economic hardship on them.

He narrated that the gesture was also a way to give the intending aspirants the opportunity to contest for the various elective positions, notwithstanding their current financial status.

Ombugu noted that as the authentic state Chairman of the LP, it was necessary to field candidates ahead of the 2027 general election despite the pending leadership tussle involving Julius Abure and Senator Nenadi Usman.

He said, “I have the mandate which has been given to us, a mandate to fill in our candidates and we are doing our best to do what the national chairman said to us. So with me, I will present this forms free of charge to all our aspirants without them paying any money.

“We are aware that many political parties put their expression of interest and nomination forms at a higher price. But the Labour Party belongs to the people. It is a party of all, that is why our logo indicates Papa, Mama and Pikin.

“Therefore as a party of the people, we have decided to issue these forms free of charge to all interested aspirants under the platform of the party.”

Ombugu, therefore, called on politicians with proven integrity to come forward to get the forms as soon as possible, so as to fill them and submit within the INEC’s stipulated time.

He further revealed that primaries for the party will take place from May 27th to 29th, while assuring that the process will be credible and rancour-free.

“May 27th is for the Governorship and House of Assembly primaries, while May 29th is going to be for the Senate and House of Representatives primaries,” he said.

Speaking about the forthcoming By-election in the Nasarawa North Senatorial District slated for June 20, 2026 by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Ombugu noted that May 25th has been fixed for the party’s primary election in order to produce a candidate for the zone.

“As a result of the demise of our brother, Senator Godiya Akwashiki, INEC announced that By-election will be held in the zone. Therefore, on the 25th of this month, we will be conducting primary election in the Nasarawa North Senatorial District in order to have a candidate who will contest during the June 20 senatorial election,” he explained.

On his part, a Labour Party governorship aspirant for 2027, Ibrahim Afaka who hails from the Nasarawa LGA of the state, vowed to do everything within his powers to end unemployment and insecurity if he is given the opportunity to serve the state during the forthcoming election.

He further lamented that the All Progressives Congress led administration in the state had completely failed since the party took over leadership, and assured that he was coming to make a positive change in the state, not for his personal benefits.

The Labour Party has remained divided following a prolonged leadership tussle between the Julius Abure-led faction and the camp loyal to former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman.

Despite the internal crisis, both factions have continued political activities and preparations for the 2027 elections across the country.
