The Nigeria Union of Teachers has condemned the recent attacks on schools in Oyo and Borno states, describing them as barbaric and inhuman. In a statement, the union said schools meant to be safe spaces have become targets of armed bandits and terrorists.

It noted that a teacher was shot dead in Oyo while wearing his union attire, and another was later beheaded. Over 40 pupils were also abducted in Borno. The NUT warned that teachers may be forced to withdraw their services if attacks continue.

Key Points:

A nationwide teachers’ strike would shut down schools and disrupt millions of children’s education.
Killing teachers in uniform signals a direct assault on the teaching profession and its symbols.
Abducted pupils face prolonged trauma, and many may never return to school.
Continued attacks deepen fear and emotional trauma among educators, students, and parents.
The government may face pressure to fast‑track security reforms in vulnerable school communities.
