Vihiga County – A wave of grief has swept through Gavalagi village in South Maragoli after an elderly man at the centre of a community-led housing project died just days after well-wishers built him a new home.

Mzee Alex Ombeva, affectionately known by locals as “Chopeto,” had recently become the focus of a moving act of kindness after his difficult living conditions touched hearts online.
How Ombeva touched well-wishers
A source told NgGossips that the cause of the man’s death remains unknown, with some attributing it to sickness while others alleged it was witchcraft.

The initiative to build him a new home gained momentum after local presenter and well-wisher Olive Keverenge shared his story online.
Community members, church leaders and donors rallied together, contributing building materials, labour, furniture and household items in an effort to restore dignity to the elderly man.
Among those who visited Mzee Ombeva during the project was Bishop Kenneth Adiara of PAG Church GS, who donated windows, a bed and a mattress.
However, the ray of hope dimmed when the elderly man passed away early this morning in the very house that had been built for him.
Ombeva’s death crushed Vihiga residents
Photos showed him kneeling to bless the young man who had changed his life, unaware he would be gone in a few days, leaving behind a crestfallen family.
“I’m heartbroken 💔 😢 😭 Our Mzee from Gavalagi village is dead 😭….Death, why?” an emotional Keverenge shared the heartbreaking update on his Facebook page.

Community members say the timing of his death has left them in deep shock, coming just as hope had begun to rise that Mzee Ombeva would finally enjoy comfort and dignity in his final chapter of life.
Those involved in the project recalled that he had remained calm and grateful throughout the process, often expressing faith and appreciation despite his frailty.

Ombeva’s new house, which had symbolised a new beginning, has now become a place of mourning.
Residents who had gathered to celebrate the transformation are now instead consoling each other, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.
What was meant to be a story of restoration has turned into one of painful reflection on life, timing, and the fragile nature of hope.
Yet many in the village say the kindness shown to Mzee Ombeva will remain a lasting memory, even as they lay him to rest.
