According to a report by The Guardian on Monday 8th June 2026, former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reportedly threatened to leave the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following a disagreement over the party’s candidate selection process in Kano State.
According to a document reportedly signed by the Kano State Chairman of the NDC, Hussaini Isah Mairiga, the changes were necessary to ensure compliance with the agreed formula for distributing party positions and elective tickets.
The document, which was copied to NDC National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson, Kwankwaso, and the party’s North-West Zonal Chairman, outlined a revised list of candidates for various federal and state legislative seats.
Among those approved for House of Representatives tickets are Isma’il Idris Sani for Kumbotso, Nasiru Ali Ahmed for Nassarawa, Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id for Kano Municipal, and Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa/Tudun Wada; Others include Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila/Takai, and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata for Gwale.
The party also announced adjustments to candidates contesting seats in the Kano State House of Assembly across several constituencies, including Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu.
NDC officials maintained that the alterations were in line with an existing agreement that allocated 60 percent of elective positions and party offices to the Kwankwasiyya bloc, while the remaining 40 percent was reserved for the party’s original structure.
The development comes weeks after NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi officially unveiled Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, cementing a major opposition alliance ahead of the polls.
The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket is expected to play a central role in the party’s campaign strategy as the NDC seeks to strengthen its position ahead of the next general election.
