In a recent interview on Nevon HQ, on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Abayomi Arabambi, the factional National Vice Chairman of the Labour Party, spoke about internal divisions within the opposition, leadership controversies, and comments attributed to political actors regarding the future of the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general elections. The discussion focused on party cohesion, candidate influence, and post-2023 election restructuring.

Arabambi revisited tensions within the Labour Party and alleged that some political figures had expressed caution about the influence and style of former presidential candidate Peter Obi in opposition politics. He argued that such concerns reflect broader disagreements over strategy and direction within Nigeria’s opposition space.

Speaking during the interview, Arabambi stated, “Charles Soludo said, ‘The Labour Party should be careful; Obi is a trader, and he will use you for trade.’” He made the remark while discussing what he described as warnings allegedly made by political actors regarding internal trust and political alliances within the Labour Party.

According to Arabambi, the opposition must be cautious in selecting leaders and building coalitions, stressing that political partnerships should be guided by ideological alignment rather than personal ambition. He maintained that failure to address internal contradictions within the Labour Party contributed to post-election instability and factional struggles.

He further argued that Nigeria’s opposition landscape remains highly competitive and vulnerable to internal disagreements, especially as parties reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. He insisted that stronger internal structures are needed to prevent recurring conflicts and leadership disputes.

Arabambi concluded by calling for greater discipline within opposition parties, urging members to prioritize stability and long-term strategy over short-term political gains as the country prepares for another major electoral cycle.
