Union Bank of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to supporting teachers and advancing quality education in the country as the 12th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year (MTOTY) competition officially commenced in Lagos.

The bank, which is participating in the initiative for the third consecutive year, joined Nigerian Breweries Plc, the Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, educators and other stakeholders at the launch of the competition, where discussions centred on strengthening educational support systems to improve learning outcomes across the country.

Speaking at the event, Union Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Olufunmilola Aluko, described education as a critical pillar of national development and a key area of investment for the bank.

According to her, investing in teachers and learners is essential to building a prosperous future, noting that sustainable growth can only be achieved when educational institutions receive the support required to thrive.

Aluko highlighted Edu360, the bank’s flagship education intervention programme under the UnionCares platform, as evidence of its long-term commitment to the sector.

She explained that the initiative supports the entire education value chain, including expanding access to education for underserved communities, strengthening teacher development, promoting digital literacy and STEM education, and preparing young people for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Aluko also urged financial institutions to move beyond traditional corporate social responsibility initiatives and play a more active role in strengthening educational ecosystems.

She noted that banks can contribute by promoting financial literacy, developing education-focused financial products, and fostering collaboration among policymakers, educators and private-sector stakeholders.

The Union Bank executive further stressed the importance of sustained public-private sector partnerships in addressing educational challenges and improving outcomes for students and teachers nationwide.

She cited the growing impact of the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition, noting that the initiative has recognised more than 300 teachers over the years and continues to celebrate excellence in the teaching profession.

Addressing educators, Aluko commended their dedication and contributions to national development, stating that teachers deserve greater recognition for the vital role they play in shaping future generations.

Union Bank said its participation in the programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education, and reflects the bank’s broader commitment to sustainable social impact across the communities it serves.
