2027: “Igbo presidency not feasible under NDC” – Ohanaeze Ndigbo faction

A faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Okechukwu Isiguzoro has declared that an Igbo presidency is not feasible under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Isiguzoro, Deputy President-General of the group, made the position known in a statement co-signed with Thompson Ohia, the faction’s National Spokesman.

The group said a thorough assessment of Nigeria’s political landscape shows that the NDC operates primarily as a regional political party, largely driven by the political interests of the Ijaw nation under the leadership of Senator Seriake Dickson.

“In this context, Ohanaeze Ndigbo advises Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, to carefully reconsider contesting the 2027 presidential election under the NDC,” the statement read.

The faction argued that the NDC, in its current form, lacks the national reach and structural strength required to effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

It added that realising an Igbo presidency would require a political platform with broad national appeal, cross-regional support, and the capacity to win majority confidence across the country.

“We therefore urge Mr. Peter Obi to reconsider his 2027 presidential ambition in the greater interest of the Igbo people,” the group said.

The statement further noted that a presidential contest under the NDC could end in defeat, thereby weakening the Southeast’s political leverage and stalling regional development.

“At the inaugural meeting of the Forum of Former Southeast Governors, led by Senator Dave Umahi in Enugu, governors unanimously acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s infrastructural efforts in the Southeast and endorsed his re-election bid as the forum’s consensus candidate,” the faction added.

The group also appealed to Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 race and throw his weight behind President Tinubu for the overall interest of the Igbo nation and the Southeast.
