Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sowore was declared the AAC presidential candidate during the party’s presidential primaries held in Abuja on Tuesday.

In his address, the chairman of the AAC primary election committee, Kayode Babayemi, said Sowore’s adoption reflects the party’s confidence in his commitment to justice, good governance, and democracy.

While accepting his nomination as the AAC flag bearer, Sowore described the party as the only genuine opposition in Nigeria.

“This year, our party, the African Action Congress, turns eight years old. As the only registered socialist party in Nigeria and indeed the only genuine opposition, we have stood firm as a moral and ideological alternative to the criminal conspiracy that other parties disguise as democracy,” Sowore said.

“The party of the most courageous people on the continent of Africa. This is the party that is not afraid of anybody,” he said.

“It is the only party that does not speak in tongues. When we want to say something, we say it the way it is, and we don’t care who is affected or whose ox is gored.”

The publisher insisted that the AAC remains committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative to cause “revolutionary change”.

“For too long, we have been treated as second-class citizens in this country called Nigeria,” Sowore said, adding that Nigerians are “tired of unemployment, we are tired of corruption, we are tired of incompetence; we are tired of crimes.”

“We are here not only to change the course of history but also to bring revolutionary change,” the activist said, dismissing claims that the AAC does not have the structure to win elections.

He thanked delegates from across the country who participated in the exercise, saying their participation showed that the party has structures.

This will be the third consecutive time the publisher will be contesting the presidential election under the AAC, the party he founded.

Following the exercise, the activist-turned-politician also stepped down as the AAC national chairman.

“Omoyele Sowore has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC),” the party wrote on its official X handle on Tuesday.

“The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party.”
