Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has taken a formal step toward the 2027 presidential race, submitting his nomination form at the National Secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja on Thursday.
The development comes at a significant moment for the ADC, which recently lost two of its most prominent figures former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso both of whom departed for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) amid reported internal disagreements and ongoing court disputes within the party.
Amaechi’s entry into the ADC presidential race marks his second attempt at the nation’s highest office.
He previously contested the 2023 presidential election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner but was unable to secure the party’s ticket, losing the primary to the eventual winner and current President Bola Tinubu.
His decision to pursue the presidency through the ADC signals his determination to remain a major player in Nigerian politics, even as the opposition landscape continues to shift ahead of what is shaping up to be a competitive 2027 general election.
