A heartbreaking video has sparked serious anger across Nigeria. In Isohumini Agbaja community, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, a self-acclaimed prophet, James Nwankpu, allegedly branded a sick child a “witch” and subjected the innocent child to torture and humiliation.………
The child had been frequently ill. The poor parents, who could not afford hospital bills, took their son/daughter to the prophet hoping for divine healing. Instead of helping, the prophet accused the child of witchcraft, saying the child did not deserve to live. In the viral video, followers sang and chanted while the man carried out the alleged inhuman treatment.
The incident came to light around May 12, 2026, when the video spread online. Many Nigerians could not hold back their tears and anger seeing the helpless child suffer.
Thankfully, the Ebonyi State Police Command acted fast. On Tuesday, May 13, 2026, Prophet James Nwankpu was arrested and taken to the State CID. The child was rescued and admitted to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) for proper medical care. Commissioner of Police Hope Okafor warned against child abuse.
Social media reactions have been very strong. One user wrote, “This is pure wickedness! Instead of helping a sick child, you call am witch? Ebonyi people, wake up!” Another commented, “Poverty is killing our children. Parents, no more taking pikin to fake prophets o.” Many said, “Arrest is not enough, he must face serious punishment so others will learn.” Some added, “This witch branding must stop in Igbo land and everywhere.”
