Champions League: Arsenal Set Unwanted Record Despite Historic Unbeaten Runs

Arsenal have etched their name into UEFA Champions League history for an unfortunate reason, becoming the first club to reach the competition’s final twice without suffering a defeat and still fail to win the trophy.

The record came into focus after the Gunners’ heartbreaking loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the 2025/26 Champions League final, where they were beaten 4-3 on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw following extra time.

While Arsenal’s unbeaten journey to the final showcased their quality and resilience, it also highlighted a stark contrast with fellow English giants Manchester United, who remain the only club to have won the Champions League unbeaten on two separate occasions.

United first achieved the feat during their historic 1998/99 treble-winning season under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Drawn alongside Bayern Munich and Barcelona in a challenging group stage, the Red Devils navigated the tournament without defeat before staging a dramatic late comeback to beat Bayern 2-1 in the final.

The achievement was repeated in the 2007/08 campaign. Spearheaded by stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, and Carlos Tevez, United recorded nine wins and four draws before overcoming Chelsea in a penalty shootout in Moscow. That triumph formed part of a remarkable 25-match unbeaten run in the competition.

Although several clubs, including Liverpool, Ajax, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, have lifted the Champions League without losing a match, none have matched Manchester United’s feat of completing two separate unbeaten title-winning campaigns.

For Arsenal, however, an unbeaten run has twice ended in heartbreak.

The North London club first reached the Champions League final undefeated during the 2005/06 season under Arsène Wenger. Along the way, they knocked out European heavyweights Real Madrid, Juventus, and Villarreal while setting a record of 10 consecutive clean sheets and going 995 minutes without conceding a goal.

Despite taking the lead through Sol Campbell in the final, Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona after goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was sent off early in the match.

Twenty years later, history repeated itself.

Under Mikel Arteta, Arsenal once again reached the final without tasting defeat, overcoming Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid on their way to Budapest. The Gunners appeared on course for a historic triumph when Kai Havertz gave them the lead, but PSG responded through Ousmane Dembele to force extra time.

With neither side able to find a winner after 120 minutes, the contest was decided by penalties, where the French champions prevailed 4-3.

The defeat extended Arsenal’s long wait for a first European Cup title and left them with the unwanted distinction of being the only team in Champions League history to reach two finals unbeaten and lose both.

As Arsenal continue their pursuit of European glory, Manchester United’s unique record remains one of the competition’s most extraordinary achievements.
