In a sad and shocking incident in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, a young man and a police officer have lost their lives after both fell into a deep water-filled pit. The event happened earlier today and has left many residents in sorrow.
According to eyewitnesses, the police officer was chasing the young man for reasons yet to be confirmed. In the middle of the chase, the young man accidentally slipped and fell into the pit. The officer, who was running after him, also lost his balance and fell into the same pit. Both men drowned before help could reach them.
A video circulating on social media shows police officers and local people making serious efforts to bring out the bodies from the pit. In the clip, people can be seen using ropes and other tools to recover the corpses as a crowd watched in shock.
One resident who spoke to journalists said, “It was very painful. The boy was running, and before we knew it, he entered the pit. The policeman too followed him inside. We tried to save them but the water was deep.”
This tragedy has raised questions about safety in the area, especially the presence of uncovered pits that can be dangerous, especially during the rainy season.
