Hon. Oghene Egoh, a former lawmaker representing Amuwo-Odofin Federal Constituency, says the era of imposing candidates on party members is over, describing direct primary elections as the true practice of democracy.

Egoh disclosed this in an interview on Sunday, in Lagos.

He commended the just-concluded nationwide All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election.

He said that the exercise was peaceful, credible and transparent.

According to him, the conduct of the primary election reflected internal democracy and gave party members the opportunity to freely choose their preferred candidates.

He applauded APC members for turning out in large numbers to vote.

He added that the votes cast were counted and winners emerged through a fair process.

Egoh said that the era of imposing candidates on party members had become things of the past.

He said that the direct primary process would further unite members and strengthen confidence in the party.

“I like this primary election initiative because it is the true test of a candidate’s popularity among party members.

“It gives members a sense of belonging as stakeholders in the party, where collective decisions are respected and upheld,” he said.

The former lawmaker commended the conduct of the exercise in Lagos State, the Centre of Excellence, Delta State and other parts of the country.

He noted that the massive support and votes recorded for President Bola Tinubu during the exercise showed that many party members still desired his leadership beyond the current tenure.

“The masses still want President Tinubu as their president and they have demonstrated this through their overwhelming support during the just-concluded exercise,” he said.

Egoh expressed optimism that Tinubu would secure a second term in office.

He said that the level of acceptance and support received from party faithful across the country was huge and encouraging.

He urged APC members to sustain the same unity, commitment and mobilisation displayed during the primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, continuous participation of party members in the democratic process would further deepen democracy and promote transparency within political parties.

Egoh also appealed to aggrieved aspirants and their supporters to embrace sportsmanship and work collectively for the success of the APC in future elections.

“Losing at the primary level doesn’t justify you maligning the party.
