•As Enugu targets Africa’s next digital goldmine with EGC 2026

By Prince Osuaqwu

Nigeria’s booming gaming industry is no longer just about football bets and flashing odds on smartphones. It is rapidly evolving into a high-tech digital economy powered by fintech, mobile payments, artificial intelligence, compliance tools, and locally built platforms — and the Enugu Gaming Conference (EGC) 2026 is positioning itself at the center of that transformation.

Scheduled for July 29–30, 2026 in Enugu, the conference is expected to bring together regulators, fintech innovators, gaming operators, investors, payment providers, and software developers to explore what many analysts now describe as one of Africa’s fastest-growing digital sectors.

Strategic timing

Africa’s gaming market generated over $2.29 billion in revenue in 2025, with Nigeria contributing an estimated $300 million, making it one of the continent’s biggest gaming economies behind Egypt. Mobile gaming now accounts for nearly 87 per cent of gaming activity across Africa, driven largely by smartphones, digital wallets, and mobile internet penetration.

Globally, the gaming industry is projected to hit between $188 billion and $197 billion in revenue, with over 3.6 billion gamers worldwide. Mobile gaming alone contributes more than $100 billion annually, underscoring how deeply digital payments and fintech infrastructure now shape the future of entertainment.

Against this backdrop, EGC 2026 is embracing the theme: “Unlocking Nigeria’s iGaming Tech Opportunity,” reflecting a broader shift away from dependence on foreign gaming infrastructure toward indigenous platforms integrated with local payment systems and regulatory technology.

Industry experts say fintech has become the invisible engine driving Nigeria’s gaming revolution.

From instant deposits and lightning-fast withdrawals to identity verification, fraud prevention, taxation, and real-time compliance reporting, gaming operators are increasingly relying on financial technology to survive in a fiercely competitive and highly fragmented market.

Speaking ahead of the conference, Event Lead, Ejiofor Agada, said the future of gaming in Nigeria would be defined less by flashy apps and more by the strength of the financial infrastructure behind them.

“Fintech is no longer just a support layer for gaming platforms. It is now the engine powering trust, scale, security, and expansion. EGC 2026 will showcase how Nigerian-built solutions can drive the entire gaming value chain, from payments to compliance and user experience,” he said.

Nigeria’s gaming ecosystem

Nigeria’s online gaming ecosystem is estimated to have crossed ¦ 5.6 trillion in market activity in 2025, with more than 60 million Nigerians reportedly engaging daily through betting and gaming platforms powered largely by mobile technology and digital payments.

Operators are also seeing explosive growth. Betting giant BetKing Nigeria, operated by KingMakers, recorded a 76 per cent revenue increase as online wagering and mobile betting adoption surged across the country.

Yet beneath the growth lies an even bigger story: the rise of local technology.

For years, many African gaming companies depended heavily on foreign-built payment gateways, software engines, and transaction systems. That model is beginning to change as Nigerian developers build indigenous fintech tools tailored to local realities — unstable infrastructure, fragmented regulation, multiple taxation regimes, and millions of unbanked users.

Why EGC matters

In the South-East, Enugu is increasingly emerging as a regulatory and innovation hub for this convergence between fintech and gaming technology. Stakeholders say recent reforms and policy frameworks are encouraging homegrown developers to create payment gateways, compliance systems, backend infrastructure, and audit technologies designed specifically for Nigeria’s market conditions.

For regulators, fintech integration may also solve one of the industry’s oldest headaches: transparency.

Real-time transaction monitoring, automated reporting systems, and digital audit trails are expected to improve oversight, reduce revenue leakages, and strengthen enforcement in Nigeria’s historically fragmented gaming environment.

Chief Executive Officer of the Enugu State Gaming and Lotteries Commission, Prince Arinze Arum, believes the conference could become a strategic gateway for global investors and tech firms seeking entry into Nigeria’s digital entertainment economy.

“For operators and technology companies looking to expand into Nigeria, particularly the South-East, this conference provides direct access to regulators, local partners, and critical intelligence needed to navigate the ecosystem effectively,” he said.

Beyond entertainment, analysts say the fintech-gaming convergence could deepen financial inclusion by bringing more Nigerians into formal digital payment ecosystems through mobile wallets, alternative payment systems, and embedded financial services.

And while concerns around regulation, responsible gaming, and consumer protection continue to grow, experts argue that stronger fintech infrastructure may ultimately provide the transparency and accountability the industry has long lacked.

As global investors race toward Africa’s digital economy, EGC 2026 is betting that Nigeria can evolve from being merely a large consumer market into a continental powerhouse for gaming innovation, fintech engineering, and digital entertainment infrastructure.

For now, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: in Africa’s next digital gold rush, the biggest winners may not just be the gamers, but the technology quietly powering every click, payment, and transaction behind the scenes.
