According to a report by Leadership Newspaper on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Mrs Pat Ibanga Akpabio, daughter-in-law of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared her intention to contest the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District seat in Akwa Ibom State under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).………
Her declaration sets up a notable intra-family political contest as she moves to challenge for the Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial position ahead of the 2027 general elections. Mrs Akpabio has previously criticized the Senate President, accusing him of underperformance in representing the district over the past three years.
She stated that her decision to enter the race was driven by a commitment to advocate for women and underserved communities across the 10 local government areas within the senatorial district.
The aspirant confirmed that she has purchased her nomination and expression of interest forms and formally presented them to supporters at her country home in Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area.
Speaking during the event, she said, “Today, I arrived in Ukana Ikot Ntuen to a reception filled with love, unity, hope, and the spirit of the people.”
She expressed appreciation to party officials and supporters for their backing, adding, “My deepest gratitude goes to the State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Prince Uwemedimo Essien, the chapter chairmen, women leaders, youth leaders, State Exco, party faithfuls, supporters, and every son and daughter of Akwa Ibom North West, who stood present as my nomination form for the Senate seat was officially handed over to me for the 2027 elections.”
Mrs Akpabio also acknowledged the support of her husband, Chief Ibanga Udo Akpabio II, describing his encouragement as steady and instrumental throughout her political journey.
She further assured constituents of her commitment to responsive representation, stating, “I hear your cries, I feel your hopes, and I carry your dreams with responsibility and honour. I will not disappoint you.”
