According to a report by Al Jazeera on May 13, 2026, Henry Wang, president of the Center for China and Globalization, has said Beijing could step in as a mediator to help ease the ongoing US-Iran conflict. He argued that China’s diplomatic position and global economic ties give it potential leverage to encourage both sides toward de-escalation and a possible negotiated settlement.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Wang highlighted the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, noting that around 40 percent of China’s oil imports pass through the waterway. He said that ending severe restrictions in the area is “in both the US and China’s interest. But of course, we need to stop the war and also have a justified outcome”. He stressed that stability in the Strait is crucial not only for China but also for global energy security and market stability.
Wang further stated that both the United States and Iran are “exhausted” from continued tensions, adding that they “need a ladder” to step back from confrontation. He explained that “China just provided those stairs” to support efforts aimed at restoring dialogue and reducing hostilities between the two sides.
He also expressed confidence in China’s potential diplomatic role, saying, “I’m sure China could be a good … mediator if necessary to finish this war.” According to him, constructive engagement remains essential for ending the conflict and building a more stable regional environment.
Security analysts note that any successful mediation effort could help reduce pressure on global energy markets and improve broader geopolitical stability. They also suggest that sustained dialogue between Washington and Tehran, supported by external actors, may be necessary to prevent further escalation. Continued diplomatic coordination is therefore seen as a key factor in managing tensions and safeguarding critical international trade routes in the coming period.
