Kevin Kiarie: Award-winning Kenyan skater fails to travel to China due to funds

“My parents supported me through high school, where I managed to score a B- in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) national examination. After that, I was on my own. I financed my university education by myself. It was not easy because of financial constraints. Since I had no money, I had to take odd jobs to support my education and meet basic needs like rent and food.

To do that, I worked as a waiter. That job kept me in school. The little money I earned went toward school fees and other obligations. I was independent, it was just me, my studies, and my job. Balancing everything was difficult, but I had to do it for my survival,” he said.

Munyak said there were times he missed classes because of work and other moments when he attended lectures while exhausted.

How did Munyak Safari apply for job?

Despite the setbacks, he remained focused and worked hard until he finally graduated and achieved his academic goal.

“I later applied for a job with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). I did this through our Member of Parliament (MP). He had requested teacher recruitment application forms from the president, and the process was on a first-come, first-served basis. I decided to try my luck and hoped for positive feedback.

By the time I graduated, I had already received confirmation that a school had been allocated to me and I had already started working,” he shared excitedly.

Munyak posted a photo of his employment letter showing the school where he had been posted and the date he was expected to report to work, a moment he described as an answered prayer.
