A Kenyan woman who lost her KSh 3 million Mazda CX-5 during protests in Githurai has revealed why she is unlikely to receive compensation from her insurance company.

Priscillah Njiraini and her husband, Henry, are heartbroken after irate protesters set the vehicle on fire at the height of the fuel price protests, which rocked the major parts of the country on Monday, May 18.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Henry, who was driving the car at the time of the incident, noted that the protesters went berserk after spotting a UDA scarf that was on the driver’s seat.

“They first invaded the car and started picking things from the car. I got out of the car to interact with them so that they could stop what they were doing. But when they found the USA sash on the driver’s seat, they started screaming ‘UDA! UDA’. They all became agitated,” he added.

Why Priscilla might not get compensated by insurance

As the couple grapples with distress from this incident, their loss is further compounded by the likelihood that the insurance might not reimburse them for the car.

Priscilla noted that, though the car was under comprehensive insurance, the package does not cover losses that happen during protests.

“So I know that I will not get paid,” she added.

The couple had a UDA sash in the car because Priscilla plans on running for an MCA seat in the 2027 elections.

“My husband only left the house because we thought the protests would be peaceful,” she said.
