Lagos Finally Cracks Down on Dirty Edible Oil Transport

The Lagos State Government has moved to improve food safety by prohibiting petroleum tankers from being used to transport edible oil.

This ban is part of a wider regulatory effort formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) and key players in the edible oil supply chain, including associations representing edible oil marketers, road transport owners, and tanker drivers.

The core concern driving this policy is public health. Tankers previously used to carry fuel or other hazardous materials may leave behind chemical residues that can contaminate edible oil, posing serious risks to consumers.

Under the new agreement, tankers designated for edible oil must be used solely for that purpose and cannot be switched to carry petroleum products or dangerous substances.

The MoU also introduces a strict compliance structure that requires all tankers used for edible oil transportation to be certified as food-grade.

Beyond just the type of tanker used, the framework is designed to raise hygiene standards, make the distribution process more traceable, and improve overall oversight of the edible oil supply chain.

To enforce compliance, stakeholders have agreed to a range of measures including registering and clearly identifying tankers, conducting regular and unannounced inspections, testing oil samples in laboratories, and carrying out joint enforcement operations.

These activities will be backed by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency Law, 2025, under which enforcement is set to be stepped up significantly.

LASCOPA also emphasized its commitment to monitoring the sector more closely and responding to consumer complaints, with the broader goal of safeguarding public health and rebuilding consumer trust in how food products are handled and transported across Lagos State.
