Speaking in an interview with PUNCH on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Mimiko said post-election findings revealed that some voters accepted as little as N5,000 in exchange for their votes.………
He noted that several of them admitted they were aware they were compromising their future, but felt discouraged by the belief that the election outcome had already been decided.
According to him, the experience highlighted that the real task goes beyond campaigning to strengthening voter education and awareness.
Mimiko stressed that Nigerians must understand the value of their votes, adding that citizens should resist the temptation of short-term financial gains that undermine long-term democratic progress.
He said,
“Many voters admitted to collecting as little as N5,000 on election day, only to regret it afterwards. Some even confessed that although they knew they were selling their future, they believed their single vote would not make any difference because the outcome had already been predetermined.”
