Mozambique is facing growing pressure as international drug cartels deepen their presence in the country, with recent arrests and government data revealing an alarming expansion of trafficking networks and rising domestic drug abuse.
Cartel Links Uncovered in Airport Arrests
Authorities intensified investigations following the arrest of three suspects — a Mozambican and two Mexican nationals — during an April 11 anti-trafficking operation at Maputo International Airport.
According to the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), the suspects are linked to international drug trafficking, document forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The Mexican nationals were identified as members of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, one of the world’s largest transnational criminal syndicates.
Authorities say the suspects intended to establish operations in Maputo Province, raising concerns about the local production and distribution of illicit drugs.
Major Chemical Seizures Signal Local Production
Following the arrests, security operatives uncovered significant quantities of drug precursors:
10 metric tons of powdered acid
Over 2,000 liters of liquid chemicals
The discovery suggests a shift from transit trafficking to local drug manufacturing hubs within Mozambique.
Regional and International Collaboration
The investigation has expanded beyond Mozambique, with SERNIC working alongside authorities in South Africa and Mexico. The Interpol is also actively supporting operations across Southern Africa, including Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
Officials revealed possible links to other foreign nationals and regional trafficking networks, highlighting the cross-border nature of the operation.
Southern Africa Becoming a New Drug Hub
Security experts warn that Mexican cartels are increasingly:
Smuggling raw materials through West Africa
Producing drugs in Southern Africa
Using the region as a distribution base
This shift is fueling a growing drug abuse crisis across multiple countries.
Rising Drug Abuse and Arrests
Government data paints a worrying picture:
4.4 metric tons of illicit drugs seized in 2025
Over 600 arrests linked to drug offenses
38% increase in drug-related hospital treatments (32,281 cases)
Authorities also spent nearly $1.4 million on drug treatment programs, underscoring the strain on public health systems.
Strategic Location Driving Trafficking
Officials say Mozambique’s geographic position makes it a critical corridor for global drug routes, including:
Afghanistan to Southern Africa (heroin and amphetamines)
Brazil to Southern Africa (cocaine)
“Routes are known and permanent, requiring continuous reinforcement of control measures,” officials stated.
Growing Security Concern
The developments highlight a dangerous evolution in Africa’s drug trade, as international cartels move beyond transit operations to establish production bases, raising concerns about long-term security, governance, and public health in the region.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to dismantle these networks and prevent Mozambique from becoming a major global drug manufacturing hub.
