Nairobi: Emotional scenes as mum reunites with daughter missing for 4 years

It was a moment of celebration, singing, and dancing for a family from Nakuru county following a heartwarming reunion after years apart.

Rose Atieno could barely hold back her tears of joy after reuniting with her long-lost daughter, Jane Akinyi, who had been missing for four years.

When did Jane Akinyi go missing?

Akinyi went missing in December 2022, leaving her family in despair as they launched a desperate and intense search for her.

The young lady disappeared in Nairobi, where she had travelled with a relative who had promised to take her to a vocational training centre.

“She had come here with my brother, who had promised to educate her and equip her with income-generating skills. They were staying in Umoja. One day, my brother returned home from work and found my daughter missing. He called me to break the news and asked if I had seen or heard from her. I was shattered and did not know what to do. I was worried sick about her because neither she nor I knew Nairobi well. She was also unable to speak, so it was hard for her to communicate,” Atieno narrated.

The family immediately began searching for Akinyi, hoping they would find her safe and sound after her disappearance.

Atieno’s brother kept updating his sister that he still had not seen or heard from his niece, which broke Atieno’s heart every time there was no news.

“I have other relatives in Nairobi whom I contacted and informed about the situation. They shared Akinyi’s photos online and also printed and pinned them on posts. Fortunately, Akinyi had been rescued by the police and taken to Smile Community Centre, where she had been staying all those years,” she added.

Over the years, the community centre took good care of Akinyi, including taking her to the hospital and educating her, since she had communication challenges.

One day, the missing woman expressed a desire to communicate with her mother, and with the guidance of the centre, she managed to contact her family.

“A woman located our home and came to Nakuru, but I was not around. When I returned, my neighbours told me the good news that my daughter had been found. The woman left the centre’s number, and I called them when I got home. I kept in touch with them until I travelled to Nairobi to meet my daughter. When she saw me, she recognised me and ran towards me. I am so happy and thankful to the community centre for caring for my daughter,” she emotionally said.

Atieno revealed that she had gone as far as Shakahola and Kware while searching for her daughter, but all her efforts had borne no fruit.

She even submitted DNA samples, hoping they would help trace her daughter, but that too proved unsuccessful.

“I thank God for reuniting me with my daughter. I endured many sleepless nights. Many times, I could neither eat nor sleep, and I almost lost hope, but now my daughter has finally been found,” she said.
