In an emotional post, Irene Kendi Abuta recounted how her son, Gyan, nearly died from tuberculosis in 2010 when he was just under two years old.

At the time, she said, the disease carried intense stigma and fear, with many families feeling isolated and hopeless after diagnosis.

According to Irene, one morning she woke to find her son extremely weak, with his pulse almost gone. Believing she was about to lose him, she turned to prayer.

“I cried to God and told Him, ‘God heal my son, and if you heal him, I will give him to you to serve you,’” she wrote, referencing biblical scripture that strengthened her faith during the difficult season.

She described how Gyan was placed on an eight-month daily treatment programme, which slowly restored his health. Month by month, the little boy regained strength and eventually made a full recovery.

At the same time, Irene said she was trying to escape what she described as a toxic and emotionally draining environment while also rebuilding her future.

Before joining university, she spent six years hawking cereals and potatoes at the market, work she says helped her survive and eventually raise school fees.

Her determination later earned her admission to the University of Nairobi under the self-sponsored Module Two programme in September 2011.

What made her story even more remarkable was that she attended classes with little Gyan by her side. She recalled breastfeeding him before, during and after lectures as she balanced motherhood, healing and academics all at once.

A photo shared online shows the young mother carrying her son while navigating campus life, resonating with many Kenyans who understand the struggles of single parenting, financial hardship and education.

After four demanding years at Kikuyu Campus, Irene graduated in December 2015 with a degree in Education Arts, proudly completing the journey alongside the son she once feared she would lose.

Throughout her message, she encouraged others never to give up, urging people to pray, work hard and remain hopeful despite life’s setbacks.

“Pray, think, move and be hopeful,” she wrote. “No word of God in His promises shall ever go back empty.”

She also encouraged people to leave their comfort zones and pursue purpose fearlessly, saying hard work and perseverance are eventually rewarded.

Her final remark left many readers both inspired and amused, as she revealed that after praying about her future, she believes God told her she would one day become Kenya’s president.

The heartfelt testimony has since drawn admiration online, with many praising her resilience, faith and determination to create a better future for herself and her son despite enormous challenges.
