The Anambra State Police Command has cautioned residents against the misuse of social media to spread unverified allegations, one-sided narratives, and content capable of inciting the public against the police and other security agencies.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had observed a growing trend where some social media users record and circulate videos accusing police officers of misconduct without first verifying the facts or reporting through official channels.

According to the command, while citizens have the constitutional right to express grievances and seek justice, the deliberate spread of misleading or unverified information could heighten public tension, undermine security operations, and erode trust in security institutions.

The police reiterated their commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights, urging members of the public to make use of established complaint and redress mechanisms within the Nigeria Police Force for prompt investigation of allegations involving officers.

The command listed several official contact lines available to residents, including the Command Control Room, Complaint Response Unit (CRU), Rapid Response Squad, Anti-Cult Unit, and the Police Public Relations Department.

The statement further warned that using social media platforms to spread false information, incite hatred, or obstruct lawful security operations could attract legal consequences.

The Anambra Police Command, however, assured residents that it would continue collaborating with other security agencies and community stakeholders to strengthen public safety, maintain law and order, and promote community-oriented policing across the state.

The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on behalf of the Anambra State Police Command, Awka.
