On May 21, 2026, the President, Bola Tinubu appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). At the age of 39, he will be the youngest to head the board. His ascent from NYSC member to registrar is bound to motivate many young Nigerians.

Segun Aina is a Computer Engineering Professor at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State. He is a computer engineer, academic and technology consultant. He concentrates on public digital infrastructure and system improvement in the public sector.

Aina was connected to JAMB before his appointment. He worked in charge of the system (admissions processing) at the board during his National Youth Service Corp (NYSC). That early experience influenced him for the better.

After completing his NYSC, he went into the academia, private consulting, and government advisory. Aina founded a company named Fluid Click Solutions Ltd. in 2010 which offers IT Solutions and Project Management. He is also interested in education technology, agriculture, hospitality and technical and vocational education.

He has published almost 30 research papers. The professional’s fields include engineering, digital systems, and institutional technologies.

Aina completed all his higher education in the United Kingdom. Below is a summary of his academic qualifications:

Aina is a member of other professional bodies. Such as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and Nigerian Computer Society (NCS) and IEEE and Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Professor Segun Aina, born in July 1986, is 39 at the time of his appointment in May 2026. He will turn 40 in July 2026, shortly before formally taking up the role of registrar on August 1, 2026. He became a professor at OAU at age 39 making him one of Nigeria’s youngest academics to attain that rank in engineering.

Segun is now the youngest individual to serve as Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board in history.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, the President named Segun Aina JAMB Registrar. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, made the announcement.

Aina will succeed Professor Is-haq Oloyede, who has headed JAMB since August 9, 2016, following the conclusion of the latter’s second term on July 31, 2026, and will officially commence on August 1, 2026.

Tinubu stated he believes that Aina’s experience and skills would be instrumental in improving JAMB operations. Many also believe that Aina’s experience would help JAMB with digital reforms. Lack of technicality and gaps in the process have led to more scrutiny on JAMB’s UTME and the JAMB admissions system. Aina has previously consulted on ICT, exam integrity, and digital process reforms with NECO, NABTEB, and various states’ ministries of education. He has also worked with the Job Creation Unit in the Office of the Vice President and has also provided advisory services to various state governments on systems design and digital transition.

Most of the Academic community tends to have a low public profile and focus on their work. So, it is no surprise that Segun Aina also has very little public information on his personal life. He is Nigerian, and after his studies in the United Kingdom, he returned home to establish a career that connects academic research with practical work in the public sector.

After he was elevated to the rank of full professor, Aina also stated, “I think hard work, but I think beyond hard work; I think also smart work.” This is a clear indication to his methodical approach and focus to have a results oriented approach, and to also disregard distraction.

He has led various mentorship programs geared towards young people who are in technology and innovation, which demonstrates a strong passion to advance the next generation. This is a critical time, as he is the head of the agency responsible for processing university admission of millions of Nigerian students, annually.
