Despite efforts by his relatives to secure his release, he reportedly died about nine days later, on May 12, while still held by the kidnappers, his death has brought widespread concern about the safety of commuters and the growing reach of criminal gangs.
Atiku, reacting through his spokesperson, described the development as deeply disturbing and said it reflects a serious breakdown of security in the country, he blamed the administration of President Bola Tinubu for failing to adequately protect citizens from rising attacks, according to him, the situation shows that insecurity has become a major national crisis rather than isolated criminal acts.
He expressed concern that if a former member of the National Assembly could be kidnapped on a major highway and die in the hands of abductors, then ordinary Nigerians are even more vulnerable, he argued that the frequency of kidnappings across highways, farming communities, and residential areas shows a troubling pattern that continues without effective control.
Atiku questioned the effectiveness of government security measures, noting that despite significant spending on security over the years, major transport routes remain unsafe, he added that repeated assurances from authorities have not translated into visible improvement on the ground.
