Oluku, Edo State – A disturbing video making rounds on social media has left many Nigerians angry and sad. In the clip, a large crowd of young people in Oluku, Edo State, gathered around an elderly woman, laughing at her, pointing fingers, and calling her a witch. The incident reportedly happened in broad daylight on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, along a roadside with bushes and a dirt path.………
In the video, the old woman, who looks frail and confused, is sitting on the ground near some green plants. She covers her face with her hands as people surround her. Some in the crowd laugh loudly, hold up their phones to record, and make fun of her. One man in a cap bends down close to her while others cheer and point. The woman appears scared and tries to hide her face. Nobody is seen helping her; instead, they seem to enjoy the moment. The background shows a typical village road with cars and more people watching.
Many believe the woman may be suffering from mental health issues or old age problems, but the crowd chose to label her a witch. Witchcraft accusations against elderly people, especially women, are still common in some parts of Nigeria. This often leads to abuse, beating, or even death. In this case, no physical beating is seen in the video, but the mockery is very painful to watch.
The video went viral today on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms. It has been shared thousands of times within hours. Many Nigerians have condemned the act. One user wrote, “This is pure wickedness. How can you treat an old woman like this? She could be somebody’s mother or grandmother. Edo people, this is not good.” Another commented, “Instead of helping her, they are mocking her. What if it was their own mother? Heartless crowd!”
Some reactions were mixed. A few people said, “If she is truly a witch, she deserves it,” but most others replied angrily: “Even if she is, mocking her like this shows we are not better than animals.” One popular comment read, “This is why Nigeria is not progressing. Superstition and lack of empathy everywhere. Take her to hospital, not turn her into comedy.”
Many called on the Edo State Government and police to investigate and protect vulnerable people. Human rights groups have also been tagged to look into the matter. Some users shared similar past cases where old women were accused wrongly and suffered.
