Trump made the remark while speaking to reporters at the White House following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which the war in Ukraine was also discussed.………
Addressing journalists during the interview session, Trump expressed concern over renewed violence after what he suggested had been signs of possible progress toward peace negotiations.
“We discussed Ukraine. It’s one that we’d like to see settled,” Trump said.
The US president added that developments on the battlefield had worsened overnight, raising fears that the conflict could continue for much longer.
“So, it’s going to happen, but it’s a shame. 25,000 people died last month,” Trump stated.
Although Trump did not specify whether the casualty figure referred to both Russian and Ukrainian losses combined, he described the humanitarian situation as tragic and unnecessary.
The president has repeatedly insisted that the war would not have escalated to its current level under his leadership, while maintaining that diplomatic engagement remains possible.
Trump also used the interview to discuss broader global tensions, including relations with China, Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the Taiwan issue.
According to him, Xi does not want further instability in the international system and prefers avoiding major military confrontations.
The American leader said he and Xi held extensive conversations on trade, artificial intelligence, nuclear weapons and geopolitical security.
