Nigeria successfully defended the Unity Cup title on Saturday with an impressive victory over Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz at The Valley in London, producing a dominant performance to retain the Afro-Caribbean tournament crown.

Key Highlights:

  • The Nigeria national team (Super Eagles) defeated Jamaica 3–0 to win the Unity Cup.
  • Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi scored twice, while Terem Moffi added another goal.
  • Nigeria took an early lead and dominated possession throughout the match.
  • The team showed strong attacking and defensive performance under coach Eric Chelle.
  • The win secured Nigeria’s successful title defense in the Unity Cup tournament.

Midfielder Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi was the star of the evening, scoring twice to cap a memorable tournament for the Super Eagles.

Stand-in captain Terem Moffi also got on the scoresheet as Nigeria secured a convincing win over the Jamaicans in front of a large crowd in south-east London.

The Super Eagles made a dream start on Saturday, taking the lead in the fourth minute.

Abdullahi reacted quickest after Jamaica goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke punched away a long throw-in delivered by Kenneth Igboke, pouncing on the loose ball to put Nigeria ahead.

The early breakthrough boosted Nigeria’s confidence, allowing Eric Chelle’s side to dominate possession and dictate the tempo of the match, much like they did in their semi-final victory over Zimbabwe earlier in the week.

Chelle made just one alteration to the team that defeated Zimbabwe, handing Rafiu Durosinmi a starting berth in place of Philip Otele.

The change had little effect on the team’s rhythm as the three-time African champions displayed cohesion, discipline and attacking flair throughout the encounter.

Jamaica threatened for the first time in the eighth minute when Kaheim Dixon delivered a cross for Brown, but goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was equal to the effort, making a comfortable save.

Nigeria nearly doubled their advantage 10 minutes before the break when Durosinmi found space on the counterattack, but Boyce-Clarke read the danger well and denied the striker.

The Super Eagles continued to press after the restart. Durosinmi came close with a header from a Femi Azeez free-kick, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.

A minute later, however, Nigeria found the second goal they deserved. Azeez delivered an accurate cross into the penalty area and Moffi rose highest to head beyond Boyce-Clarke and extend the lead.

Jamaica struggled to contain Nigeria’s attacking threat as the match progressed.

Boyce-Clarke was forced into another fine save from a dangerous Azeez free-kick, but the Super Eagles remained relentless in their pursuit of more goals.

Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. After winning possession in Jamaica’s half, substitute Philip Otele released Abdullahi, who calmly fired an angled shot past Boyce-Clarke to complete his brace and seal a commanding victory for Nigeria.

The triumph ensured that the Super Eagles retained the Unity Cup title and extended their positive run under Chelle.

Nigeria will now shift focus to an international friendly against Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on June 3, as preparations continue for upcoming competitive fixtures.
