According to a report by Channels TV, on Sunday May 17, 2026, Barrister Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has revealed details of a private meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, during which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader commended his integrity.
The lawyer and political actor stated that Atiku praised his principled stance on national issues, describing men of his character as a rare commodity in contemporary Nigerian politics.
Okonkwo explained that the private conversation took place against the backdrop of heavy online backlash and character assassination directed at him by supporters of the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
“The last time I was with Atiku, he looked at me and he said, ‘Your type is rare.’ And I was like, how do you know that? He said some other things to me,” Okonkwo revealed.
Detailing the context behind the former Vice President’s high praise, Okonkwo added:
“And you know why he said it? He saw that everybody from the toxic Obi followers was saying he has dollarized me, he has monetized me. And he knows we have never discussed anything about money.”
The ADC chieftain argued that the relentless cyberattacks and allegations of financial inducement from the Obidient movement are fundamentally backfiring.
Rather than diminishing his public profile, Okonkwo maintained that the smear campaign has ironically elevated his standing and credibility in the eyes of senior, highly experienced political leaders across the country.
He described the recurring accusations of being bought over as not only completely false but inherently self-defeating for his detractors.
According to him, top-tier political actors can see through the propaganda because they are well aware of exactly what conversations have taken place behind closed doors and what has not.
Okonkwo concluded by asserting that true political integrity cannot be erased by coordinated social media blackmail, adding that seasoned leaders will always recognize and value figures who prioritize substance over transactional politics.
