  • What looked like a dream relationship for a university student turned out to be a painful lesson in self-worth
  • Mabizela’s affair with a wealthy man was filled with luxury dinners, five-star hotels and international trips, but she gained nothing
  • The young woman opened up about why financial comfort does not always equal emotional security

A young woman has sparked widespread conversation online after opening up about the emotional cost of dating a wealthy older man while she was still a struggling university student.

Siyamthanda Mabizela revealed how, in her early twenties, she believed she had found her escape from poverty when she entered a relationship with a man 10 years older than her.

Mabizela’s lover was wealthy

In a deeply personal reflection, she recalled how the man seemed to have it all: two properties, a BMW M4, an MBA, and a senior management role at one of the Big Four firms.

At the time, Mabizela had very little to her name, having been raised in difficult circumstances and still a student with no steady income and no assets.

The contrast between their lives made the relationship feel like a dream come true, and the romance quickly became filled with luxury and glamour.

There were expensive dinners, five-star hotel stays and even international holidays. He introduced her to members of his family, fuelling her hopes of marriage and a stable future.

“I wanted to be his wife,” she admitted. “I thought it would lift me out of poverty and lead to a happily ever after.”

Why Mabizela was unhappy in her relationship

But beneath the polished image, Mabizela says she slowly realised something important was missing. Despite the lavish gifts and experiences, she felt emotionally unfulfilled and increasingly dependent.

She claims her partner expressed affection mainly through material things and intimacy, but never invested in helping her build a life of her own.

“He would take me to expensive places,” she recalled, “but wouldn’t support me in getting my driver’s licence or even buy me a laptop.”

The relationship was also marred by infidelity. After three years together, she finally walked away, leaving the relationship with absolutely nothing.

Lessons Mabizela picked

Yet what she gained was far more valuable than the luxury she lost, as she holds a postgraduate degree from a leading university, pays her own bills and has found peace in independence.

Rather than framing her experience with bitterness, Mabizela chose to turn it into a message of empowerment.

Among the lessons she shared were the importance of financial independence, setting firm boundaries and building a personal identity before seeking fulfilment in romantic relationships.

“Independence is leverage,” she wrote. “Having your own education and money gives you the option to walk away when a relationship doesn’t serve you.”

She also urged women to spend time building themselves before aspiring to become wives, warning that relying on a partner for happiness or security can come at a high emotional cost.

Having been there and experienced it all, she has learned that no amount of material things can replace true love.

“Love will come and go, but some opportunities only visit once in a lifetime. Choose yourself,” she concluded.

Man thanks lover for standing by him

Meanwhile, a grateful man shared how his woman had stuck by him ever since the time they were both struggling in 2019.

The relationship culminated in marriage in 2025, after which they moved abroad in search of greener pastures, where they still live.

It all started when Opabenegh’s girlfriend arrived in Canada and provided for him until he was able to relocate and join her.
