A young man found himself forced to quit his university studies after one year due to several challenges.
Haji had to drop out of university after his first year, mainly because of financial difficulties that became overwhelming.
He had maintained a strong academic record that earned him a place at university through hard work, but he struggled financially.
“My mum died in 2014. My father is alive, but he does not care about me because he believes I have reached an age where I should be independent. He does not even have detailed information about my current situation after leaving school. He neglected me and left me in a position where I have to fight for myself, work hard, and survive. He is not concerned. It was also difficult for me to go back to him because of my age, so I have to fight for myself,” the 27-year-old said.

How much does Haji make daily?
Following that reality, Haji turned to the streets to earn a living by collecting and selling cans and plastic bottles.
He disclosed that he does not earn much from the hustle and cannot raise enough money to return to school.
“Sometimes I wake up at 3am to start my hustle because I cover long distances collecting cans and plastic bottles. However, I do not work the whole day. I have two shifts, one at 3am and another from 3pm after I have rested. I earn at least KSh 250 daily, which is only enough for my basic needs and cannot cater for school fees and related expenses.
Sometimes I do not find any plastic bottles or cans. Those days are difficult because I have to go back home empty-handed,” he said.
Which course was Haji pursuing?
Haji was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, but his studies lasted only one year before financial difficulties forced him to stop.

Since he could not go back to his father for help, he had to drop out and look for a source of income. He added that other family members were also unable to assist him.
“They would refer me back to my father, who is not willing to return me to school. I have no help whatsoever at the moment, and that is why I chose to become a can collector. Maybe things would have been different, and I hope doors will open for me to return to school. But for now, I have to do what I can to survive,” he added.
Wycliffe Opondo, a social media expert, charged the youth to learn the trends in the technology industry and, most importantly, learn Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“When you talk about AI, most people just think of ChatGPT. Numerous tools out there can help one gain more skills and make them competitive in this troublesome job market. It is indeed hard to get jobs, and it is even harder these days to work without AI knowledge. You can learn about these tools online and even get certificates. You can build websites without needing coding knowledge and make money. They just need to learn,” he told NgGossips.
