US condemns Hezbollah’s call to overthrow Lebanon government

The United States has strongly denounced the “reckless” advocacy by Hezbollah for the toppling of Lebanon’s democratically elected government.

Washington noted that the militant organization has ignored repeated calls from Lebanon’s government to cease its attacks and respect a ceasefire.

The U.S. said Hezbollah continues to fire on Israeli positions and move fighters and weapons into southern Lebanon to destabilize the country and maintain its power at the people’s expense.

The Trump administration insists Lebanon’s government is working on recovery, reconstruction, international assistance, and a stable future for its citizens with America’s full support.

Hezbollah, according to the State Department, is trying to drag Lebanon back into chaos and destruction. “The era in which a terrorist group held an entire nation hostage is coming to an end,” it reads.

The U.S. affirmed support for Lebanon’s leadership in its efforts to restore authority and work for the people, vowing that Hezbollah’s threats of violence and overthrow will not be allowed to succeed.

But Hezbollah and its officials have already indicated their resolve not to recognize any agreements arising from the Lebanon-Israel discussions that were held in Washington.

Last week, the U.S. sanctioned nine individuals accused of enabling Hezbollah to undermine Lebanon’s sovereignty and, by extension, the Iranian regime’s “malicious agenda in Lebanon.”

The designations target individuals who impede the organization’s disarmament, including members of parliament, an Iranian diplomat, and certain Lebanese security officials.
