President Muhammadu Buhari swore him in on 21 August 2019 after being nominated and confirmed by the Senate. As Mamman was removed from office by Buhari on 1 September 2021, the Minister of State for works and housing Abubakar Aliyu was appointed.
Saleh comes from Taraba State. He earned a higher national diploma in electrical electronics from Kaduna Polytechnic in 1988 and an MBA in business administration from Bayero University Kano in 2015.
The Technical School in Mubi, Adamawa State, was where Saleh began his career as a teacher in 1981. In 1992, he transferred to Taraba State, where he rose to the rank of assistant director in the Ministry of Works and retired in 2002. After retirement, he became a full-time businessman and politician.
A Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Saleh Mamman, former Minister of Power, to 75 years in prison for money laundering and fraud involving ₦33.8 billion.
Mamman was convicted on all 12 counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He received seven years each on 10 counts, and three and two years on counts four and five, respectively.
Presiding Judge James Omotosho ruled that the sentences would run consecutively without the option of a fine, except for count four, which allows for a ₦10 million fine.
On May 7, Mamman was tried and convicted. According to Judge Omotosho, the prosecution proved the former minister’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Mamman’s arrest warrant was issued by the court. Mohammed Ahmed, representing Mamman, told the court that he does not know the whereabouts of Mamman, and he could not get him on phone.
After sentencing, Judge Omotosho directed all security agencies to coordinate with Interpol to ensure Mamman’s arrest.
The court ruled that the sentence would commence from the date of Mamman’s arrest.
