In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, Rivers State elder statesman and Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) pioneer spokesman, Anabs Sara-Igbe, addressed ongoing political tensions in Rivers State and the wider implications for opposition politics in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.………
During the interview, Sara-Igbe stated, “You are destroying the PDP, and you have destroyed every party that is challenging BAT.” He made the remark while responding to concerns about internal divisions within major political parties and the impact of such divisions on democratic competition in the country.
Sara-Igbe argued that the continued disagreements, rivalries, and defections among key political actors have significantly weakened the structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition platforms. According to him, these internal conflicts have reduced the ability of opposition parties to function effectively as a unified political force.
He further suggested that the struggle for influence and control within party structures has created instability, making it difficult for opposition groups to coordinate strategies or present a strong alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The elder statesman emphasized that a healthy democracy requires strong political parties capable of internal discipline, unity, and ideological clarity. He warned that without such qualities, opposition politics risks becoming fragmented and ineffective in national contests.
Sara-Igbe also called on political leaders to reflect on the long-term consequences of their actions, stressing that weakening party structures for personal or factional advantage ultimately undermines democratic development.
He concluded by urging greater political responsibility among leaders across party lines, noting that Nigeria’s democracy will be strengthened only when parties prioritize collective interest over individual ambition and internal power struggles.
