A Nigerian doctor has warned that high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can quietly damage the body without showing any signs.

Speaking during an interview to mark World Hypertension Day on Sunday with the theme “Controlling Hypertension Together!”, Dr. Frederick Unuigbokhai of AIM Group explained that hypertension happens when the force of blood moving around the body becomes too high.

He said many people wrongly believe stress alone causes the condition.

According to him, unhealthy diets, smoking, alcohol use, obesity and lack of exercise also increase the risk of developing high blood pressure.

Dr. Unuigbokhai said foods with too much salt, especially processed foods and snacks, can be harmful if eaten often.

He added that people with family members who have hypertension may also be at greater risk.

The doctor warned that hypertension is sometimes called a “silent” condition because many people do not know they have it until serious health problems appear.

These problems can include stroke, kidney failure and heart disease.

He also noted that young people are now developing hypertension more often, meaning adults are not the only ones affected.

Dr. Unuigbokhai advised Nigerians to check their blood pressure regularly, exercise, eat healthier foods and avoid smoking and heavy alcohol use.

He said there is no permanent cure for hypertension, but it can be controlled with healthy living and proper medical care.
