Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly settled on former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as his preferred Atiku Running Mate for the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Key Highlights:

  • Atiku Abubakar reportedly selects Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate for 2027.
  • The proposed Atiku-Amaechi ticket is expected to strengthen the ADC ahead of the presidential election.
  • Amaechi’s emergence is seen as a strategic North-East and South-South political balance.
  • The decision reportedly follows weeks of consultations within the opposition coalition.
  • Atiku uses Democracy Day message to criticize the Tinubu administration and call for protection of democratic institutions.
  • Opposition coalition continues efforts to build a formidable alliance ahead of 2027.

The reported decision follows weeks of intensive consultations and negotiations among key stakeholders within the opposition coalition and is expected to clear the path for an Atiku-Amaechi presidential ticket ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

Political observers believe Amaechi’s emergence as the likely vice-presidential candidate represents a strategic calculation designed to balance the ticket across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, pairing Atiku from the North-East with Amaechi from the South-South region.

The development is also expected to bolster the ADC’s electoral prospects as opposition parties intensify coalition-building efforts and prepare for what is expected to be a fiercely contested presidential race.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and influential political figure, had previously dismissed speculation linking him to the vice-presidential slot. After obtaining his presidential nomination form, he maintained that he was pursuing his own presidential ambition and had openly opposed suggestions of a consensus arrangement within the party.

However, sources familiar with the negotiations indicated that Atiku reportedly assured Amaechi of a significant role during the campaign and in any future administration, a factor believed to have influenced his acceptance of the position.

The reported alliance comes amid growing political realignments across the country, with opposition leaders exploring strategic partnerships aimed at challenging the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, in his Democracy Day message commemorating the anniversary of the historic June 12 struggle, Atiku criticized the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that certain government actions pose threats to democratic values and institutions.

He called on Nigerians to remain vigilant in defending democracy, safeguarding democratic institutions, and resisting attempts to weaken opposition voices across the country.

According to Atiku, the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists who fought for the restoration of civilian rule should inspire citizens to preserve the gains of democracy and protect the legacy of June 12.

The former vice president further alleged that opposition parties have been subjected to sustained pressure through internal leadership disputes, defections, and what he described as the misuse of state institutions.

He warned against democratic backsliding and emphasized the need for public institutions to remain impartial as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

If officially confirmed, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket would represent one of the most significant political alliances ahead of the next presidential election, potentially reshaping the opposition landscape and influencing electoral calculations across the country.
