The Kano State Government has concluded arrangements to sponsor a mass wedding for 1,500 couples, with a total budget of ₦1.5 billion approved for the initiative.

The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Corps, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists in Kano, noting that preparations for the programme are already in advanced stages.

According to Daurawa, part of the pre-wedding process includes compulsory medical screenings for intending couples. These tests cover HIV, hepatitis, pregnancy, and genotype compatibility to ensure healthier family foundations and reduce the risk of hereditary diseases such as sickle cell anaemia.

He explained that each couple will benefit from approximately ₦1 million worth of support, which includes essential household items such as beds, mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, furniture, and food supplies.

In addition, the state government will pay a dowry of ₦100,000 for each bride, alongside an extra ₦100,000 provided as seed capital to support small-scale businesses after the wedding ceremony.

Daurawa stated that the mass wedding initiative fulfills a campaign promise made by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to social welfare and family stability.

He further revealed that intending couples have been sensitised on marital responsibilities, including a guideline discouraging divorce without prior engagement with the Hisbah Board.

The Commander-General also urged couples to prioritise genotype testing before marriage to prevent avoidable health complications in children.

He added that the official date for the mass wedding ceremony will be announced upon final approval by the governor.
