A student of the Lagos State University (LASU), Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, has died from injuries he sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.

The deceased, a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts, reportedly came under attack alongside his friends on the night of May 29, 2026.

The university disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday by its acting Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Olaniyi Jeariogbe.

According to the statement, LASU management received news of the incident shortly after it occurred and activated support measures for the injured student.

“The management of Lagos State University received with profound sadness the news of the death of one of its students, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph (Matric No. 240341269) of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, following injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos,” the statement said.

The university noted that the acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, immediately intervened by providing support to the student, briefing the vice-chancellor, and maintaining contact with medical personnel handling his treatment.

Despite efforts to save his life, Otabor died on Tuesday, June 2, after days of hospitalisation.

The university added that it was working closely with law enforcement authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the attack and the prosecution of those responsible.

“The university is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the attack are thoroughly investigated and those responsible are brought to justice,” the statement added.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, describing the incident as a painful loss to the institution.
