The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has doused a fire outbreak triggered by a mobile phone battery explosion at Tecno Complex, Mokola Roundabout, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

A statement on Tuesday, issued by the state’s Fire Services Chairman, Moroof Akinwande, said the incident happened on Monday, June 8, at 20:15 hours.

Akinwande said fire personnel led by ACFS Amoo promptly mobilised to the scene, following a distress call from Mr Oluyomade Adepeju, that a shop had been engulfed by fire at Tecno Complex Roundabout, Mokola, Ibadan.

He added that the agency’s firefighters swiftly contained and extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjoining shops and nearby properties.

According to him, preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by the explosion of a mobile phone battery, which ignited nearby combustible materials.

“At exactly 20:15 hours on Monday, 8th June, 2026, the Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distress call from Mr Oluyomade Adepeju reporting a shop fire at Tecno Complex Roundabout, Mokola, Ibadan.

“Fire personnel led by ACFS Amoo promptly mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the second shop located on the upper floor of the commercial building was engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the premises.

“The firefighters swiftly contained and extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjoining shops and nearby properties.

“Preliminary fire investigation revealed that the fire was caused by the explosion of a mobile phone battery, which ignited nearby combustible materials.

“No casualty was recorded during the incident. The firefighting appliance returned safely to the station at 22:58 hours and resumed operational standby,” Akinwande said.

The Fire Services Chairman commended the officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force, Mokola Divisional Headquarters, for providing adequate security coverage throughout the operation.

He urged members of the public to strictly adhere to safety precautions while using electrical and electronic appliances in order to prevent explosions that may result in fire disasters.

Akinwande also emphasised the importance of installing fire extinguishers in all commercial buildings for prompt response to fire outbreaks at the incipient stage.
