A Kenyan mum has shared how transferring her daughter from a boarding school to a day school helped restore her daughter’s confidence, improve her academic performance, and rebuild their relationship, amid growing concerns about unrest in some boarding schools.

The mother said the decision followed months of emotional strain as her daughter’s grades dropped from strong marks to D’s and E’s, alongside behavioural changes that raised concern.

Ciru Mwangi told NgGossips that her daughter became withdrawn, less expressive, and struggled to cope in the boarding school environment.

“I had started losing her. She dimmed, lost her spark, and her grades went to Ds and Es. She became a ‘yes’ child. Parents, don’t ever wish for a yes child. You want an outspoken child,” she said.

She added that the student herself had repeatedly expressed discomfort with the school’s pace and environment, noting that she was not performing at her best academically. According to the mother, disciplinary cases became more frequent, eventually leading to a threat of expulsion, after which the family opted for a transfer.

The mother emphasised the importance of communication between parents and children in guiding educational decisions.

“Parents should be very intentional with their children and most importantly, TALK to them. Be a parent and also a friend. Also be very observant and present, that way you will be able to observe any behavioural change in them,” she said.

She further noted that not all children thrive in the same academic environments, stressing the need to place learners in schools that match their abilities.

“It is also important to take a child to a school of their level. We took our girl to a national school, but it was not on her level. She pointed it out, said she was not comfortable with it, the pace among other things,” she explained.

The mother said repeated disciplinary hearings and declining motivation contributed to poor performance, which eventually led to the expulsion decision and subsequent transfer, following a request by the father.

She added that after moving to a nearby day school, her daughter has significantly improved emotionally and academically.

“I am besties with my girl now, and she is at her happiest. She enjoys school so much and speaks highly of the teachers plus the owner of the school. She is THRIVING,” she said.
