Human rights activist and former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, has reacted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account following a moment involving Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, during a public speaking engagement at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

The incident occurred during the university’s convocation ceremony, where the governor was invited to address graduating students and other dignitaries. In a video from the event that later circulated online, the governor appeared to struggle with the pronunciation of several basic grammatical expressions while delivering his remarks. The moment quickly drew attention on social media, where users debated both the delivery and the broader expectations placed on public office holders when speaking in formal academic settings.

In his response posted on Saturday, June 6, 2026, Odinkalu commented on the situation and suggested that the governor’s communication challenges were connected to broader governance and legal concerns he has frequently raised in public discourse. He referenced what he described as troubling patterns around judicial processes, implying that certain court decisions or orders have played an undesirable role in political administration within the state.

Odinkalu, who is widely known for his critical and outspoken stance on issues of governance and human rights in Nigeria, further argued that the episode reflected poorly on the governor’s ability to communicate effectively in formal environments. According to his interpretation of the moment, the difficulty displayed during the speech went beyond a simple slip and instead raised questions about preparedness and presentation at high-level public functions.

The video of the governor’s address continued to gain traction online, sparking mixed reactions from members of the public. While some viewers focused on the humor and embarrassment of the moment, others emphasized the importance of substance over style in leadership communication. A section of commentators also pointed out that public officials are often placed under intense scrutiny, especially when addressing academic audiences where expectations for clarity and articulation are high.

As discussions continue across social media platforms, the incident has added to ongoing debates about political leadership, public speaking standards, and the role of criticism in shaping public perception of elected officials in Nigeria.
