Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have rescued seven kidnapped farmers and recovered stolen motorcycles following a bandit attack on farming communities in Gandi, Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The operation was carried out on Tuesday by troops of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army deployed in Gandi after receiving reports of an attack by armed bandits on farmers working in the area.

A security source disclosed that the troops swiftly mobilised and engaged the attackers in a coordinated operation, leading to the successful rescue of the abducted victims and the recovery of motorcycles stolen during the assault.

According to the source, the bandits stormed farmlands around Gandi in the early hours of Tuesday, attempting to abduct farmers and dispossess them of their belongings.

The prompt intervention of the troops disrupted the operation and forced the attackers to retreat, enabling security personnel to secure the release of the kidnapped farmers.

One civilian reportedly sustained a gunshot wound during the encounter and was immediately evacuated to the General Hospital, Gandi, where he is receiving treatment.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly on the operation, said the rapid deployment of troops helped prevent further casualties and property losses.

He noted that the operation reflected the increasing effectiveness of ongoing military offensives against criminal groups operating across parts of the North-West.

According to him, security agencies have continued to intensify proactive measures aimed at protecting farming communities, particularly during the peak farming season.

He added that troops remain committed to creating a safe environment for farmers to carry out their activities without fear of attacks or intimidation.

The source further highlighted the importance of timely intelligence gathering and rapid response in addressing security threats in rural communities.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts against banditry and other criminal activities.

The latest operation is seen as a boost to ongoing security efforts in Sokoto State, reinforcing the determination of the military and other security agencies to protect lives, safeguard livelihoods and sustain pressure on criminal networks threatening peace and stability in the region.
