As per a report from Channels, on Friday, June 12, 2026, Samson Itodo, the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, expressed his thoughts regarding President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech, calling it one that included crucial messages typically expected from a national leader during such a significant democratic event.
His remarks came right after the President’s address for Democracy Day, which emphasized themes of national unity, democratic ideals, and the nation’s prospects ahead.
Itodo stated that the President’s address echoed Nigeria’s historical fight for democracy and acknowledged the sacrifices of those who stood against authoritarian governance.
He pointed out that the speech underscored the commitment of citizens who worked tirelessly to restore democracy during tough times in the country’s past.
The address also honored those who helped foster and protect the democratic institutions within Nigeria.
Itodo remarked that these features of the speech were essential as they reminded Nigerians of the hard work and sacrifices that shaped the democratic framework present today.
The Yiaga Africa leader also highlighted the national awards given to several advocates of democracy and notable public figures as a significant highlight of the Democracy Day celebrations.
He mentioned that recognizing those who helped promote democratic governance was an important part of the occasion.
He indicated that honoring the efforts of individuals who championed democratic ideals helps to keep their contributions alive in collective memory and emphasizes the role of civic engagement in nation development.
He remarked that the President’s words and the actions taken during the celebration showed an awareness of the historical importance of Democracy Day.
While he positively evaluated the speech’s content, Itodo emphasized that the advancement of democracy should not be judged solely based on speeches or public declarations.
He contended that the real essence of democracy is reflected in its influence on citizens’ everyday lives.
According to him, Nigerians are primarily focused on how democratic governance leads to better living conditions, economic prospects, safety, and accessibility to services.
He observed that although people generally endorse democracy as a political system, many express dissatisfaction with its current implementation and effects in the country.
He articulated that public demands reach beyond mere political language and are increasingly directed towards concrete results.
He stated, “Listening to the President, it’s clear he addressed all the necessary points that should be made, offering the type of discourse suitable for a president on a day like this. I believe the president communicated effectively with the Nigerian populace.”
