Hon. Afam Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency and caucus leader in the House of Representatives, has sparked a fresh wave of political debate following his recent comments regarding the shifting alliances within Nigeria’s opposition. Ogene addressed the growing tension between the African Democratic Congress and former presidential candidate Peter Obi. He dismissed the criticisms following Obi’s departure as emotional reactions rather than objective political observations.

According to a video posted on the Official YouTube channel of SYMFONI on Friday May 15, 2026, while responding to claims of dishonesty and betrayal leveled against the former governor, Ogene defended the strategic move to a new platform. He stated, “ADC leaders are behaving like cheated lovers over Peter Obi’s exit,” suggesting that the party is simply struggling to accept the loss of its most influential figure.

The legislator argued that the political space must remain fluid and adaptable, especially when existing structures become bogged down by legal battles and internal sabotage. He maintained that the decision to leave was a necessary step to ensure that the voice of the opposition remains viable ahead of the next general elections. Ogene insisted that the focus should remain on the survival of the democratic process.

Furthermore, the lawmaker noted that the intense backlash from former allies only confirms the significant impact Peter Obi has on the national political landscape. He claimed that the bitterness displayed by some leaders is a distraction from the real issues affecting Nigerians today, such as inflation and insecurity. According to him, the time has come for politicians to prioritize the welfare of the masses over party ego.

In his concluding remarks, Hon. Afam Ogene called for a more mature approach to coalition building and political disagreements. He urged opposition figures to stop the public tantrums and instead focus on creating a united front that can offer Nigerians a credible alternative. The lawmaker believes that the current bickering only serves the interests of the ruling party while weakening the collective strength of the people….See More
