Prof. Okey Ikechukwu, the executive director of development specs academy, has raised a massive alarm regarding the sudden exit of Governor Seyi Makinde from the peoples democratic party to join the allied peoples movement. This high profile defection is being characterized by the veteran political analyst as a calculated move that could fundamentally alter the landscape of the upcoming general elections scheduled to hold in 2027.
According to a video posted on the official youtube channel of Arise News on Thursday May 14, 2026, while discussing the rapid splintering of the main opposition party, he stated, “some people are even seeing it as a conspiracy to further split the southern vote.” He suggested that this fragmentation ensures that even if a southern candidate emerges, they will likely fail to win.
The professor noted that the current crisis within the party is a direct result of total incompetence among those who were supposed to lead after the last election cycle. He argued that the ongoing factionalization has become so severe that it is now almost impossible to identify the legitimate leadership of the party. This internal wreckage is widely believed to be an orchestrated political execution.
Ikechukwu further emphasized that the movement led by the oyo state governor might lack the necessary national muscle to create any significant electoral impact outside of his immediate primary constituency. He warned that seeking a new platform this late in the day could actually backfire and negatively affect the political fortunes of the governor, especially if the alliance fails to acquire the needed legal legitimacy.
In his concluding remarks, the professor insisted that unless the various opposition groups can find a way to set aside their selfish interests and form a united front, the ruling party will easily dominate the field. He maintained that the current trajectory of the opposition leads only to a well orchestrated burial ceremony for their relevance, as they continue hunting for platforms instead of leadership.
