A young man, Abubakar Haruna, in Potiskum, Yobe State, died in a road accident during a bride conveyance celebration.

The accident, which occurred on Friday, has renewed concerns over reckless conduct by youths during social ceremonies in the community, as a group of young men escorting a bride rode motorcycles in a dangerous and aggressive manner through a busy part of the town.

An eyewitness, according to reports by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), explained that the riders moved at high speed, performed risky manoeuvres, and showed little regard for pedestrians or other road users.

The report added that the deceased’s brother, Muhammad Haruna, confirmed the incident, saying the situation quickly turned tragic as the convoy approached a crowded section.

Haruna further explained that his brother was standing by the roadside when one of the riders struck him violently on the head. He lamented that the impact caused Abubakar to lose balance before falling into a nearby drainage channel.

He stated that before anyone could help him, he had already died from the injuries sustained.

According to him, “Abubakar Haruna’s death is heartbreaking, sudden, and entirely preventable.”

The deceased’s brother stated that the incident was not only painful to the family, but “something that should never have happened.”

Muhammad said reckless riding during bride conveyance celebrations had become common among youths in the area, adding that every celebration now comes with dangerous motorcycle displays that put innocent people at risk.

He called on authorities in Yobe State to introduce stronger safety regulations and enforce existing traffic laws, stressing that if the government does not act now, more innocent lives may be lost through carelessness and indiscipline.
