The reported killing of Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, said to be the second-in-command of the Islamic State globally and a leading figure within the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has been described as a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s long-running battle against terrorism.

According to Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (rtd), the operation carried out jointly by the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the United States military could become one of the most significant victories in the country’s counter-terrorism campaign if properly sustained and consolidated.

For more than 15 years, Nigeria has grappled with insurgency driven by Boko Haram and ISWAP, resulting in thousands of deaths, destruction of communities, displacement of millions, and repeated attacks on military formations, schools, places of worship, and public infrastructure.

Usman noted that despite these challenges, the resilience of Nigerians and the commitment of the nation’s armed forces have remained strong.

He commended the precision operation reportedly conducted in Metele, Borno State, under Operation HADIN KAI in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), describing it as evidence of growing sophistication in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations.

According to him, the mission reflected effective intelligence gathering, surveillance, operational planning, and coordination between air and ground forces.

Usman stressed that beyond the elimination of a top terrorist commander, the operation carries strategic importance by sending a strong message that terrorists would find no safe haven anywhere.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing political and strategic support to the armed forces and for strengthening international partnerships in the fight against terrorism.

The retired army general also commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, officers, soldiers, and troops of Operation HADIN KAI for their courage and sacrifices in difficult operational environments.

He said the successful execution of the mission without reported casualties or loss of military assets demonstrated the professionalism and preparedness of the personnel involved.

Usman equally acknowledged the role of the United States government and military authorities, stressing that terrorism has become a transnational threat requiring intelligence sharing, technological cooperation, and coordinated action among nations.

He noted that the reported commendation from US President Donald Trump further highlighted the importance of international solidarity against violent extremism.

However, he warned against complacency, stating that terrorist groups often reorganise quickly after suffering major losses.

He urged the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Operation HADIN KAI, and the Multinational Joint Task Force to intensify operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters across the Lake Chad Basin and surrounding regions.

Usman also called for stronger collaboration among Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger Republic, noting that terrorism in the Lake Chad region requires a united regional response.

He urged Nigerians to support security agencies through vigilance and intelligence sharing, adding that communities must refuse to provide shelter or assistance to terrorist groups.

The retired military officer further appealed to political leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, and the media to support national counter-terrorism efforts through responsible communication and public enlightenment.

Usman expressed optimism that Boko Haram and ISWAP could eventually be defeated through persistence, coordination, technological advancement, and public support.

He said the latest operation should not be viewed merely as a tactical success but as a defining moment capable of boosting troop morale, weakening terrorist networks, and strengthening national unity against extremism.

According to him, Nigeria has sacrificed too much in lives and resources, making it imperative to decisively end insurgency and restore lasting peace in the North East and beyond.
