President Bola Tinubu has assured the people of Oyo State that the Federal Government is working closely with state authorities and security agencies to secure the release of pupils, students and teachers abducted by gunmen in Esiele community, Oriire Local Government Area.
The President also condemned the reported killing of one of the kidnapped teachers, describing the act as “barbaric.”
In a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu said he was deeply saddened by the development and expressed sympathy to the families of the victims.
“I am saddened by the reported killing of one of the teachers kidnapped by the gunmen who invaded the community,” the President said.
“I sympathise with Governor Seyi Makinde and commend the steps he has taken on the matter. I sympathise with the families of the kidnapped victims.”
Bandits invaded the Esiele community last Friday and abducted staff, students and pupils from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School.
President Tinubu assured Governor Seyi Makinde and the people of Oyo State that the Federal Government would collaborate with the state government to rescue all those still in captivity.
“The Federal Government is working with the Oyo State government to rescue all the victims,” he said.
The President praised the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioners of Police in Oyo and Kwara states for their swift response to the incident.
“I commend the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioners of Police in Oyo and Kwara States for their quick intervention and the deployment of a tactical and the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) team to rescue the victims,” Tinubu said.
According to the President, the Inspector-General of Police is personally leading a technology-driven operation aimed at rescuing the abductees and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“The IGP, following my instructions, is personally leading the tech-driven operation. We expect a breakthrough soon,” he said.
“The bandits and all their local collaborators will be fished out and made to face the full wrath of the law.”
President Tinubu said the latest abduction underscored the urgent need to establish state police to strengthen security in underserved communities across the country.
“Cases of kidnapping further make imperative the establishment of state police to man some of our underserved areas,” he said.
“The National Assembly should accelerate the enactment of the law creating state police.”
Security operatives are continuing search-and-rescue efforts as authorities intensify operations to secure the safe return of the remaining victims.
